The titular character, Pollyanna Whittier, is a young orphan girl who goes to live with her stern spinster Aunt, Polly. Pollyanna faces different hardships at the hands of her aunt but tackles them playing "The Glad Game", a game taught to her by her late father. The game revolves around always finding something to be glad about in every situation.
Pollyanna is today considered a classic of children's literature, with the title character's name becoming a popular term for someone with the same very optimistic outlook.
