They learn about the Argus pheasant, the Beethoven bird and the six o'clock cicada, encounter the ant-lady, flying snakes and luminous mushrooms, search the forest floor at night for nocturnal amphibians, and come face-to-face with the realities of deforestation. They also meet their counterparts in Brunei and compare experiences of the rain forest. The book concentrates on the teenagers' own view of the rain forest. Diary entries, sketches and letters home give the flavour of direct personal experience.
