    Jane Austen, Alice Johnson, Audioliterature

    Audiobook (Audioliterature, July 14, 2017)
This early novel is often called Jane Austen's Gothic parody. Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers are quintessential gothic ingredients; but the listener is also rewarded with Austen's typical and wonderful sense of satirical humor! Our heroine is Catherine Morland, a seventeen-year-old woman from a country parsonage. While spending a few weeks in Bath with a family friend, Catherine falls in love with Henry Tilney, who invites her to visit his family estate, Northanger Abbey. Once there, Catherine, an avid reader of Gothic thrillers, lets the shadowy atmosphere of the old mansion fill her with doubt and fear. What lies behind the death of Henry's mother? Is there a terrible family secret? Can she really rely on Henry? Or has our lovely heroine just read to many gothic stories?

eBook (Joe Books LTD, Aug. 13, 2013)
Notable as the first of Austen's work to be completed (although she had started Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice before,) Northanger Abbey was not actually published until after her death. Most easily described as a coming of age story, it is also a lovely romance. Seventeen year old Catherine Morland is invited to go to Bath to visit family friends. Inquisitive and imaginative, Catherine is a huge reader of Gothic novels and is thrilled to be visiting Northanger Abbey, a place she expects to be full of the romance and mystery she has read about. When she meets the Tilney and Thorpe families, Catherine is thrust into a love triangle when Henry Tilney and John Thorpe vie for her affections.

  • Northanger Abbey

    Jane Austen

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 20, 2017)
Jane Austen’s first novel, Northanger Abbey—published posthumously in 1818—tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen’s fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical Northanger Abbey pokes fun at the gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex.

    eBook (, March 29, 2017)
Northanger Abbey tells the story of a young girl, Catherine Morland who leaves her sheltered, rural home to enter the busy, sophisticated world of Bath in the late 1790s. Austen observes with insight and humour the interaction between Catherine and the various characters whom she meets there, and tracks her growing understanding of the world about her. In this, her first full-length novel, Austen also fixes her sharp, ironic gaze on other kinds of contemporary novel, especially the Gothic school made famous by Ann Radcliffe. Catherine's reading becomes intertwined with her social and romantic adventures, adding to the uncertainties and embarrassments she must undergo before finding happiness.

How is this book unique?Unabridged (100% Original content)Formatted for e-readerFont adjustments & biography includedIllustratedAbout Northanger Abbey by Jane AustenNorthanger Abbey /ˈnɔrθˌæŋɡər/ was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, though she had previously made a start on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. According to Cassandra Austen's Memorandum, Susan (as it was first called) was written circa 1798–99. It was revised by Austen for the press in 1803, and sold in the same year for £10 to a London bookseller, Crosby & Co., who decided against publishing. In the spring of 1816, the bookseller was content to sell it back to the novelist's brother, Henry Austen, for the exact sum—£10—that he had paid for it at the beginning, not knowing that the writer was by then the author of four popular novels. The novel was further revised by Austen in 1816/17, with the intention of having it published. Among other changes, the lead character's name was changed from Susan to Catherine, and Austen retitled the book Catherine as a result. Austen died in July 1817. Northanger Abbey (as the novel was now called) was brought out posthumously in late December 1817 (1818 given on the title page), as the first two volumes of a four-volume set that also featured another previously unpublished Austen novel, Persuasion. Neither novel was published under the title Jane Austen had given it; the title Northanger Abbey is presumed to have been the invention of Henry Austen, who had arranged for the book's publication.
