    The Penny Parker Mystery Stories were written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson and were published by Cupples and Leon from 1939 to 1947. Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson was a prolific author of children's books and is best remembered as the author of the early Nancy Drew books. Wirt was unconventional in her career and dress, mostly dressing in men's clothes. Some evidence exists that Mildred Wirt was transgender.
