    Die 11-jährige Naomi, auch "Chirp" genannt, lebt mit ihrer Familie in Cape Cod. Chirps Mutter ist Tänzerin, leidet aber an den ersten Symptomen von Multipler Sklerose (und damit einhergehender Depression), was dazu führt, dass sie ihren Beruf nicht mehr ausüben kann. Chirps Vater arbeitet als Therapeut, doch in Familienangelegenheiten versteckt er sich allzu häufig hinter seiner professionellen Fassade. Chirps ältere Schwester befindet sich mitten in der Pubertät und kapselt sich vom allgemeinen Familienalltag ab. Soweit scheint das Leben es gut mit der kleinen Familie gemeint zu haben, bis eines Tages die Tragödie passiert. Chirps Mutter verliert den Kampf gegen die Depression und nimmt sich das Leben. Chirp und ihre Familie stehen vor den Scherben ihres Familienlebens und müssen nun mühsam einen Neuanfang wagen, der alle Beteiligten vor eine enorme Herausforderung stellt. Was zunächst unmöglich scheint, wird irgendwann doch wieder greifbar: zarte Momente der Hoffnung. Nicht zuletzt, weil es Menschen wie den Nachbarsjungen Joey gibt.
