  • One Day in the Woods

    Jean Craighead George, Gary Allen

Library Binding (Katherine Tegen Books, Oct. 4, 1988)
It is sunrise in the Teatown Woods of New York's Hudson Highlands. Rebecca, a young explorer, climbs a beech tree to the canopy-the highest layer of plant life-to begin her vigil for the mysterious ovenbird. "I'll know an ovenbird," she says to herself. "Uncle Luke said it's a wizard. A wizard does magic. That's easy."During her day-long outing, Rebecca discovers that wizardry abounds in this magnificent woodland. She is enchanted by the magic of a flying squirrel, disappearing deer, and wood ducklings. But Rebecca does not know in which layer-the canopy, shrub, or field-the ovenbird lives. And the elusive bird keeps her waiting.Newbery Medalist Jean Craighead George vividly describes the beauty and symbiotic relationships present in the Northeastern Deciduous Forest. Her lyrical prose, enhanced by Gary Allen's thoughtful, detailed illustrations, exquisitely captures a young girl's spirit of adventure and sensitivity to nature.

Joseph G. Bilby, James M. Madden, Harry Ziegler

Paperback (The History Press, Feb. 16, 2015)
The history of the Garden State is filled with well-known events and forgotten happenings. German Americans opened the nation's first kindergarten in Hoboken on February 11, 1861. Prohibition brought more than two hundred bootleggers together in Sea Bright on August 15, 1924, to discuss a fixed price on their product. As America fought World War I and desperately needed ammunition, the T.A. Gillespie Shell plant exploded in Sayreville on October 4, 1918, killing at least one hundred people. From military feats and shady politics to the extraordinary episodes in the lives of everyday people, explore an entire year of events from New Jersey's history. Local historians Joseph Bilby, James Madden and Harry Ziegler chronicle the state's most intriguing and monumental moments--one for each date on the calendar.

  • A Day with a TV Producer

    Graham Rickard

Hardcover (Hodder & Stoughton Childrens Division, Dec. 31, 1980)
This is a minor yet charming 1980 piece of Doctor Who memorabilia. It is notable because it is entirely behind-the-scenes. It documents Producer John Nathan-Turner's glory days: his first season producing the show. What a self-promoter! He is featured on just about every page. 55 pages; illustrations throughout. Written at an upper elementary level ("Romana throws a beachball for K9"), this is part of an "A Day With a Nurse/Fireman/Etc." series: small books for small hands with a single large photograph on every page with accompanying text. Most of these photos are staged and many look staged. There are a number of nice shots of the location shooting on Brighton for "The Leisure Hive," the first episode of Season 18. We get to see Matthew Waterhouse without the wig he wore in his first episodes. We get to see June Hudson "presenting" her "new" costume redesigns for the 4th Doctor. For the 1980's Doctor Who geek, there's a lot to wonder at here. JN-T looking thin and fresh-faced. A particularly clear and informative shot of the wall of JN-T's office. Director Lovett Bickford appears but, unlike favored members of JN-T's inner circle, he never is given a name in the book. Tom Baker, looking healthy and rested, being measured at Madame Tussaud's. A couple of shots of Jane Judge. And there's Pepsi!
