It’s 1987 and Ally McCoist, a revered Scottish Internationalist playing for Rangers FC, is raising money for the Sick Kids Unit at Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow.Primary Schools throughout Scotland have been invited to join the fund raising and as an incentive Ally will personally collect the cheque from the lucky Primary School in each region which raises most money. What’s more, the student who raises the most money in each of these lucky schools gets to present the cheque to Ally - on stage - in front of the whole school.9 year old Rob is Rangers daft and a major fan of Ally’s. He is determined to present that cheque, but so too is Colin Johnston.....but hang on.....Colin is a CELTIC supporter!!!Colin is new to this Fife school, he's very poor, not very good at his school work and has been getting a lot of bullying from some of the older boys in school.Rob is one of the few boys to give Colin a break and stick up for him - which he greatly appreciates. During the fund raising it becomes fairly obvious that Colin is failing miserably in raising money for the appeal which brings on even more bullying....... UNTIL..... on the final day students have left to hand in the money they have raised.......Colin finds a bag of money lying on the school football field....and worse – he knows who it belongs to. Meanwhile some boys have been suspended for stealing money they raised for Ally’s campaign and suddenly Rob comes under suspicion too because he can’t ‘find’ his money.A disastrous phone call leads to a mega misunderstanding between a harassed Head and an equally harassed Rob’s mum. A shocked Rob learns he has ‘been banned’ by the Head from school for a week, which means not only will he not get the chance to present Ally with the school cheque he won’t even get the chance to see his hero.Rob and his mum skulk off to Rob’s auntie in Currie for the weekend. They return about 10am on the Monday, the day of Ally’s visit. Rob’s house is close enough to hear the excited noises coming from the school, which he can’t stand so he very dejectedly wanders off, head down, tears never far away, towards another part of town.....Turns out it will now be Colin who presents the cheque to Ally......and yet Colin’s not as happy about that as we might think he would be......Desperation sometimes makes people do desperate things – often on the spur of the moment – as Colin finds out.So, we have one very excited Fife school waiting for Ally McCoist, one very guilty boy waiting to present the cheque and one very sad and miserable boy slowly walking the streets thinking he won’t even get to see his hero.....Meanwhile Ally, the bold hero, is tearing his hair out trying to follow the map.....he’s lost.... and he’s racing up the same long road that sad Rob is trudging down....But hey, if I tell you any more of the story I’ll spoil it for it you. What I can tell you is there is a fair amount of humour in it, a slightly zany but kind Headmistress, a totally loopy School Secretary clearly besotted with Ally, a bunch of half cut local councillors, dozens of school students running amok – I mean running very important errands throughout the school for em....for somebody important..... and of course, a strong but fair condemnation of bullying during Ally’s speech to the assembly. To discover what happens download the story from Amazon.
