  • The Code of the Woosters: Jeeves to the Rescue

    P. G. Wodehouse, Jonathan Cecil

Audio CD (AudioGO, July 19, 2011)
Who would think that an 18th-century silver cow-creamer could cause so much trouble? Uncle Tom wants it, Sir Watkyn Bassett has it, and Aunt Dahlia is blackmailing Bertie to steal it. With relations between Bertie and Sir Watkyn being far from cordial (ever since the Boat Race night, when Sir Watkyn fined the young Wooster five pounds for pinching a policeman's helmet), the situation looks tricky. Arriving at Totleigh Towers, Sir Watkyn's country seat, matters get progressively worse. The nightmare crew includes not only that fierce old magistrate but his right-hand man, the frightful Roderick Spode. Add to that Madeline Bassett, Gussie Fink-Nottle, Stiffy Byng, and Harold "Stinker" Pinker and there's only one thing to say: "What Ho, Jeeves!"
  • Candide

    - Voltaire, Jack Davenport

Audio CD (AudioGO, Nov. 13, 2012)
Candide, published simultaneously in five European capitals in 1759, became an instant bestseller and is now regarded as one of the key texts of the Enlightenment. Voltaire’s preoccupations with evil and with various kinds of human folly and intolerance found a perfect vehicle in the philosophical tale. A master storyteller, he combined often wildly entertaining action with profoundly serious sense, parodying the traditional chivalric and oriental tales with which his public was more familiar to create a witty allegory of a young man whose optimism gives way to disillusionment after a series of terrible misfortunes.

King Lear of Britain has three daughters: the hard-hearted Goneril and Regan, and the good and gentle Cordelia. He determines to divide his kingdom between them, giving the largest share to she who can say she loves him the best. Lear's tragic lack of judgement and self-knowledge is paralleled by the blindness of the loyal Gloucester who is persuaded to reject his virtuous son Edgar in favor of the villainous Edmund.
  • The Merchant of Venice

William Shakespeare, Haydn Gwynne, Bill Nighy, Arkangel Cast

Audio CD (AudioGO, Feb. 3, 2005)
[Full-Cast Audio Theater Dramatization. Portia is played by Hadyn Gwynne and Shylock by Trevor Peacock. Antonio promises money to help his friend Bassanio woo Portia. He borrows the sum needed from the cruel Shylock, but there will be a dreadful penalty if the loan is not repaid. The golden world of Portias Belmont calls forth some of Shakespeare's most lyrical love poetry. But the dark shadow of Shylock is never far from the heart of this brilliant comedy as it moves toward its courtroom climax in which the opposing values of justice and mercy must be resolved.
