    John Buchan

    Hardcover (Blurb, May 22, 2019)
The setting is contemporaneous with publication: the beginning of the twentieth century. Crawfurd grows up in Kirkcaple, by the North Sea, where he first encounters the antagonist, Laputa, performing a ritual on the beach. Crawfurd's father dies, and he goes to work as a shopkeeper in a place called Blaauwildebeestefontein. Crawfurd comes into contact with a Portuguese man, Henriques, and again with Laputa, and he gradually learns of illegal diamond smuggling and of a planned rising of the native people of the region, including the Zulu people and the Swazi people, led by Laputa. Laputa's skill as a preacher allows him to inspire many tribes across the region to follow him, and he invokes the legend of Prester John and positions himself as the rightful heir and leader who can rise up against colonial rule. Crawfurd learns more about this after meeting Captain Arcoll, who leads the colonial army and police.

  • Prester John

    John Buchan

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 25, 2017)
Growing up on the Scottish coast, Crawfurd sees two unlikely figures performing a bizarre ritual on the beach. Years later, Crawfurd encounters the same men, but this time in Africa... Crawfurd is thrown into the heart of an armed uprising, and finds his life in constant peril as he seeks to avert a war and find his fortune... Written by John Buchan, author of the classic The Thirty Nine Steps, Prester John is a classic adventure which still grips the reader today. The archive nature of the book does mean that some words, phrases and attitudes used in the book are very much of their time and would not be acceptable if used in the Twenty First Century.
