    ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON

    eBook (, July 5, 2020)
TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY IN THE CEVENNESillustrated complete edition with original vintage classic illustrations‘Stevenson’s masterpiece, a “little book” that describes a wayward, inconsequential journey and a strange love affair (with a donkey) in which, as in all the best journeys, the author finds himself renewed, refreshed and, returning from his travels, once more ready for the fray.’(1879) is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works and is considered a pioneering classic of outdoor literature. In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson, author of classics such as Kidnapped and Treasure Island, embarked on a walking tour of the CĂ©vennes, a mountainous region in south-central France. His travelling companion was Modestine, a diminutive donkey with a mind of her own who, over the course of the journey, bore some of his provisions and much of his rancour. Modestine and Stevenson tramped without plan or purpose through scenic villages and fearsome forests—reportedly infested with man-eating wolves—depending on peasants, Trappist monks and passersby for supplies, shelter and directions. They were beset by storms and unhelpful residents, but were also granted views of splendid vistas and cold, clear nights. And, over twelve days, 200 kilometres, and many shared adventures, Stevenson came to love his obdurate, manipulative little companion.Travels with a Donkey in the CĂ©vennes has inspired generations of later travellers and writers, from John Steinbeck—and his Travels with Charley—to Bruce Chatwin and Graham Greene, including present-day hikers who retrace the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail. Written in timeless prose, and with biting wit, this slim volume is a treat for all readers.

    (, Feb. 9, 2019)
The wild Cevennes place of France bureaucracy the backdrop for the pioneering travelogue 'Travels with a Donkey, ' written by way of a younger Robert Louis Stevenson. Ever hopeful of encountering the journey he yearned for and raising lots wished finance at the begin of his writing profession, Stevenson embarked on the120 mile, 12 day trek and recorded his stories on this magazine. His handiest companion for the experience was a predictably cussed donkey referred to as Modestine. 'Travels with a Donkey' gives the reader a unprecedented glimpse of the character of the writer, and the journalistic and frequently comical style of writing is in clean contrast to Stevenson's greater well-known works.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 16, 2014)
The CĂ©vennes was the site of a Protestant rebellion around 1702, severely suppressed by Catholic Louis XIV. The Protestant insurgents, a minority population in the region, were known as the Camisards. Stevenson was well-versed in the history, romantically imagining scenes from the rebellion along the way. He notes that the Catholics and the Protestants, at the time of his travels, lived peaceably but with an absolute divide between the two communities. A young Catholic man who married a Protestant girl and changed his faith in the process was unanimously condemned for this breach of loyalty, an example of the sentiment "change is not good" which pervaded the countryside.
