Hardcover (1st World Library - Literary Society, Feb. 20, 2006)
No one intended to leave Martha alone that afternoon, but it happened that everyone was called away, for one reason or another. Mrs. McFarland was attending the weekly card party held by the Women's Anti-Gambling League. Sister Nell's young man had called quite unexpectedly to take her for a long drive. Papa was at the office, as usual. It was Mary Ann's day out. As for Emeline, she certainly should have stayed in the house and looked after the little girl; but Emeline had a restless nature. "Would you mind, miss, if I just crossed the alley to speak a word to Mrs. Carleton's girl?" she asked Martha. "'Course not," replied the child. "You'd better lock the back door, though, and take the key, for I shall be upstairs."

    L. Frank Baum (1856 - 1919)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
This collection of twelve fairy tales comes from the creator of the famous Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum. Dating from 1901, these stories are naturally a bit old-fashioned, and some may seem quite strange and overall politically incorrect for our present reality. If they were published today, it is very unlikely that they would be called fairy tales; they would be put instead in the “fantasy” category, because even if there contain magical elements, the stories are not exclusively about children, au contraire: they have the power to enchant both young and mature readers. Another thing to be appreciated is that they are original stories, not versions of classic fairy tales. “American Fairy Tales” is a work of its time that must be read and understood in the context. The author uses his great skills to transform the ordinary into magic, with enchantment and humor. Readers will meet original characters: modern fairies, pink glass dogs, the King of the Polar Bears, zombie birds, princesses - who causes extraordinary things to happen. Some ordinary town folks eat magic bonbons and their behavior goes crazy, a girl discovers something totally unexpected in her attic, a dummy comes to life, a young cowboy captures Father Time, a plumber falls in love with a princess, a regular water pump pumps gold and many other situations – all being set in… America: Chicago, Boston, New England etc. Each fairy tale has its own moral, which is detailed in the end, just in case you missed it. Most of them preach against the seven deadly sins. However, we can say that there is one exception where the moral seems to be missing, but actually it is a bit twisted: “The glass dog” tale, in which the wizard, who should tell the moral in the end, is scared away by the barking dog.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated American Fairy Tales by Lyman Frank Baum American Fairy Tales is the title of a collection of twelve fantasy stories by Lyman Frank Baum. Lyman Frank Baum was doing well in 1901, better than ever before in his life. He had written two popular books, Father Goose: His Book and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and was determined to capitalize on this success. In addition to American Fairy Tales, Baum's Dot and Tot of Merryland and The Master Key appeared in 1901. Two of the stories, "The Enchanted Types" and "The Dummy That Lived," employ knooks and ryls, the fairies that Baum would use in The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus the next year, 1902. "The Dummy That Lived" depends upon the idea of a department-store mannequin brought to life, an early expression of an idea that would be re-used by many later writers in television and films.

    eBook (, March 19, 2017)
In Chicago, an ordinary key unlocks a magical trunk packed with robbers and a pie. In Boston, five magical bon-bons make an ordinary senator, an ordinary professor, an ordinary girl and her ordinary parents do the most extraordinary things! A young cowboy lassoes Father Time; the dummy in Mr. Floman's department store window comes to life; and a tiny beetle gives a New England farmer and his wife a pump which pumps not water, but gold!Author of the much-loved Oz books, L. Frank Baum transforms the familiar with his magical mix of humor and enchantment. Most of the twelve stories in this delightful collection are set in America where, so it seems, modern fairies, knooks, and ryls are always causing the most astonishing things to happen! These tales will enchant both young and old. When American Fairy Tales first appeared, Baum's reputation as a storyteller had already been established by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written in 1900. The twelve stories in this collection were originally syndicated weekly in at least five newspapers during the first half of 1901. The first book edition, which this facsimile reprints, came out later that year.
