Last Christmas, eight-year-old Harvey asked Santa Claus to cure his mother of cancer. His wish was ignored. As money was needed to pay for her treatment, his family lost many things, including their happiness upon facing her ill-timed death. Determined to make things fair, Harvey elaborates a scheme to ensnare Santa the moment he shows up in his living room on Christmas Eve. His goal is to take as many materials from his sack as possible and help his family recover everything they lost. Although he keeps the plan secret, Harvey’s best friend and neighbor, Dylan, uncovers it. He brings word to their two amigos: Corey and Brandon. One wants to help, the other believes it is immoral to pursue such a thing, even if the heist is veiled with good intentions. Harvey doesn’t care about anyone’s opinion and is resolute on abducting Santa alone. With Christmas rapidly approaching, the group is hounded by Garrett, the most vicious bully in school. As someone who enjoys destroying whomever gets in his path, his atrocities render Harvey powerless to pursue his holiday plan. "A Kidnapped Santa Claus" is a short story by L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz stories. In it, The Daemons of the caves, resentful of Santa Claus, who rebuffs their attempts to subvert him by temptation, capture him in his sleigh on Christmas Eve and imprison him in their caves. Santa's helpers: a fairy, pixie, knook, and ryl, finish his deliveries with a few comical mishaps. Assembling a magical army of good beings, the queen of the fairies leads an attempt to rescue Santa Claus from the clutches of the evil Daemons. Published in 1904, the story has a somewhat darker tone than its predecessor, The Life and Adventures of Santa Clause.

Very much in the style of L. Frank Baum ( The Wizard of Oz), this story shows that Harry Potter was not the first remarkably popular world hit in junior literature. A Kidnapped Santa Claus, a fun fantasy, is actually a continuation of the first novel Baum wrote in this vein, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. In it, he charts his hero's life from a foundling in the forest to becoming all children's favorite uncle. This story, though, has the advantage of brevity.

"A Kidnapped Santa Claus" was first published in the December 1904 edition of The Delineator, the women's magazine that would print Baum's Animal Fairy Tales in the following year.
