  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf, Helen Dunmore

Paperback (Vintage Books, April 1, 2011)
This Orange Inheritance Edition of "To the Lighthouse" is published in association with the Orange Prize for Fiction. Books shape our lives and transform the way we see ourselves and each other. The best books are timeless and continue to be relevant generation after generation. "Vintage Classics" asked the winners of The Orange Prize for Fiction which books they would pass onto the next generation and why. Helen Dunmore chose "To the Lighthouse". The serene and maternal Mrs Ramsay, the tragic yet absurd Mr Ramsay, together with their children and assorted guests, are holidaying on the Isle of Skye. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse Virginia Woolf constructs a remarkable and moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life, and the conflict between male and female principles. "One of the finest novels in the English language". (Helen Dunmore).

  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Redgrave

Audio CD (BBC Audiobooks, Oct. 1, 2007)
Dramatized here by Vanessa Redgrave and a full cast, To the Lighthouse is a great literary achievement, and Virginia Woolfs most popular novel. This semi-autobiographical novel is based on her recollections of family holidays in Cornwall. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Virginia Woolf constructs a moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life. The novel is split into three sections. In the first, the gracious and imaginative Mrs. Ramsay and her self-centered and absurd husband are preparing for a dinner party, where the guests include a philosopher, a young couple, and painter Lily Briscoe (based on Virginia Woolfs sister Vanessa). In the second section the story moves on to after the war and we discover that Mrs. Ramsay, her son and one of the guests have died. In the last section Lily Briscoe finally achieves what she has been trying to do with her painting and Mr. Ramsay and the children reach the lighthouse -- a trip planned in the first section that only now reaches fruition.
  • Modern Classics To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf

Hardcover (Penguin Classic, Nov. 29, 2011)
A brand new series of five of Woolf's major works, in beautifully designed hardback editions. In this, her most autobiographical novel, Virginia Woolf captures the intensity of childhood longing and delight, and the shifting complexity of adult relationships. It is an extraordinarily poignant evocation of a lost happiness that lives on in the memory; from an acute awareness of transcience, she creates an enduring work of art.
  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf

    Paperback (IndoEuropeanPublishing.com, Feb. 19, 2011)
To the Lighthouse (5 May 1927) is a novel by Virginia Woolf. A landmark novel of high modernism, the text, centering on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920, skillfully manipulates temporality and psychological exploration. To the Lighthouse follows and extends the tradition of modernist novelists like Marcel Proust and James Joyce, where the plot is secondary to philosophical introspection, and the prose can be winding and hard to follow. The novel includes little dialogue and almost no action; most of it is written as thoughts and observations. The novel recalls the power of childhood emotions and highlights the impermanence of adult relationships. Among the book's many tropes and themes are those of loss, subjectivity, and the problem of perception. In 1998, the Modern Library named To the Lighthouse No. 15, on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the one hundred best English-language novels from 1923 to present. (wikipedia.org)

Audio CD (Brilliance Audio, July 22, 2014)
To the Lighthouse is Virginia Woolf’s arresting analysis of domestic family life, centering on the Ramsays and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland in the early 1900s. Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, Eyes Wide Shut), who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Woolf in the film adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Hours, brings the impressionistic prose of this classic to vibrant life.Split into three parts, the story observes Mrs. Ramsay, Mr. Ramsay, and their children at their vacation house on the Isle of Skye. While the novel follows seemingly trivial events between the family members, the plot takes a backseat to philosophical introspection, which gave the novel its fame as an icon of modernist literature. The Ramsays' quest to recapture meaning creates a powerful allegory of man’s impermanent battle with the tangible world. To the Lighthouse is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star helped select.
