    Danny receives a train ticket to visit his uncle as a 10th birthday present. Danny's mother objects to letting the boy take the train by himself but she is persuaded by Mr. Wolff to let the boy take the trip. At the first stop, Danny sees a soda machine on the depot platform and decides to get off the train to buy a soda. As he runs to the machine, he trips and falls and bruises his knee and hand. Distracted by his injuries, the youngster does not notice the train begin to leave the station. He is left stranded in a strange city. While trying to decide what to do about his predicament, two older, boisterous boys come around the corner of the station building. Danny knows how mean older boys can be, especially to a stranger, and he decides to follow the tracks and walk to his uncle's house. No sooner than he begins his journey, Danny meets Annie Foxx, a young girl who is running away from home because she feels neglected by her parents since the birth of her new baby brother. Annie talks Danny into taking her with him, since she has an aunt who lives in the same city as Danny's uncle.Along the way, the kids meet a homeless hobo who takes them under his wing and joins with them on the excursion. The trio encounter numerous exciting and harrowing adventures and in the end they help rescue a captive oil tycoon and subdue his kidnappers.
