    Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 22, 2016)
Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet who, along with his friend William Wordsworth, helped find the Romantic Movement. Coleridge collaborated with Wordsworth on Lyrical Ballads, a highly influential book of poetry that marked the start of the Romantic age. Coleridge is also well known for writing Biographia Literaria, an autobiography in prose. The book is unique for its loose structure as it is more of a meditative biography instead of being straightforward. Included in Lyrical Ballads is the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner which narrates the story of a sailor after he returns from a long voyage. The poem is Coleridge's most famous and is considered one of the greatest in English literature.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 1, 1817)
Biographia Literaria, or in full Biographia Literaria; or Biographical Sketches of My Literary Life and Opinions, is an autobiography in discourse by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which he published in 1817, in two volumes. It has twenty-three (23) chapters. The work was originally intended as a mere preface to a collected volume of his poems, explaining and justifying his own style and practice in poetry. The work grew to a literary autobiography, including, together with many facts concerning his education and studies and his early literary adventures, an extended criticism of William Wordsworth's theory of poetry as given in the preface to the Lyrical Ballads (a work on which Coleridge collaborated), and a statement of Coleridge's philosophical views. In the first part of the work Coleridge is mainly concerned with showing the evolution of his philosophic creed. At first an adherent of the associational psychology of David Hartley, he came to discard this mechanical system for the belief that the mind is not a passive but an active agency in the apprehension of reality. The author believed in the "self-sufficing power of absolute Genius" and distinguished between genius and talent as between "an egg and an egg-shell". The discussion involves his definition of the imagination or “esemplastic power,” the faculty by which the soul perceives the spiritual unity of the universe, as distinguished from the fancy or merely associative function.

Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.
