    Hardcover (IndoEuropeanPublishing.com, May 30, 2019)
Henry Jackson van Dyke Jr. (November 10, 1852 – April 10, 1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman.Van Dyke was born on November 10, 1852, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Henry Jackson van Dyke Sr. (1822–1891), a prominent Brooklyn Presbyterian clergyman known in the antebellum years for his anti-abolitionist views. The family traced its roots to Jan Thomasse van Dijk, who emigrated from Holland to North America in 1652.The younger Henry van Dyke graduated from Poly Prep Country Day School in 1869, Princeton University, in 1873 and from Princeton Theological Seminary, 1877.He served as a professor of English literature at Princeton between 1899 and 1923. Among the many students whom he influenced was, notably, future celebrity travel writer Richard Halliburton (1900–1939), Editor-in-Chief, at the time, of the Princeton Pictorial.Van Dyke chaired the committee that wrote the first Presbyterian printed liturgy, The Book of Common Worship of 1906. In 1908–09 Dr. van Dyke was a lecturer at the University of Paris.By appointment of President Woodrow Wilson, a friend and former classmate of van Dyke, he became Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913. Shortly after his appointment, World War I threw Europe into dismay. Americans all around Europe rushed to Holland as a place of refuge. Although inexperienced as an ambassador, van Dyke conducted himself with the skill of a trained diplomat, maintaining the rights of Americans in Europe and organizing work for their relief. He later related his experiences and perceptions in the book Pro Patria (1921).Van Dyke resigned as ambassador at the beginning of December 1916 and returned to the United States. He was subsequently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received many other honors. (wikipedia.org)

Paperback (FQ Classics, May 24, 2007)
You know the story of the Three Wise Men of the East, and how they traveled from far away to offer their gifts at the manger-cradle in Bethlehem. But have you ever heard the story of the Other Wise Man, who also saw the star in its rising, and set out to follow it, yet did not arrive with his brethren in the presence of the young child Jesus? Of the great desire of this fourth pilgrim, and how it was denied, yet accomplished in the denial; of his many wanderings and the probations of his soul; of the long way of his seeking, and the strange way of his finding, the One whom he sought--I would tell the tale as I have heard fragments of it in the Hall of Dreams, in the palace of the Heart of Man.

In this beautiful story, 'The Story Of The Other Wise Man', Artaban, "a man of the ancient priesthood, a man born for inward conflict and a life of quest", sells his house and all of his possessions, and buys three jewels to carry as tribute to the newborn who would be called King of Israel. Artaban spends many years searching for his King, and during his journey surrenders his three jewels to help those in need. As his life fades away, with nothing left for tribute, and feeling he has failed to find the King, he hears a sweet voice: "Verily I say unto thee. Inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me."

  • The story of the other wise man

    Henry Van Dyke

    Hardcover (Revell, Jan. 1, 1959)
One of Henry van Dyke's most popular stories, The Story of the Other Wise Man (1896), is a parable about altruism. With bold originality, van Dyke adds a fourth Magus, Artaban, to the story of the three Wise Men in the Bible. Artaban sells all he owns to bring three precious jewels to the newly born Christ child. On his way to meet the baby Jesus, however, he is delayed by people who need his aid and as a result he finally uses up all his precious jewels without ever seeing baby Jesus. In the end, Artaban has a vision of Jesus Christ telling him that in helping others, he has seen and helped Christ himself. The Story of the Other Wise Man has been published in eighteen editions in the United States and England and translated into many languages.
