  • The Iron Heel

    Jack London

Paperback (Dover Publications, Sept. 22, 2009)
The Iron Heel treads upon the faces of the poor. Determined to crush the working class at any cost, the brutal dictatorship incites a paranoid atmosphere of witch-hunting hysteria, employing gangs of thugs to stifle free speech. Avis Everhard, wife of a labor leader, narrates this gripping novel. In moving terms, she reveals the wretched poverty that props up aristocratic wealth and recounts the desperate struggles of revolutionaries against the insidious rise of the Iron Heel. George Orwell hailed this prescient tale as "a truer prophecy of the future than either Brave New World or The Shape of Things to Come." Written more than a century ago, Jack London's harrowing vision of class warfare and a totalitarian state anticipates the development of fascism, the spread of terrorism, and the oppressive forces of government surveillance and authority. A short novel with remarkable depth, it continues to resonate with modern readers as both a satire and a warning.

"The Iron Heel", american classic written by Jack London in 1908, is considered one of the earliest novels of modern Dystopian Fiction, which would lead to works later known as Soft Science Fiction. Jack London, a socialist himself, portrays America under tyrannical rule, the terrible oppression of an American oligarchy at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, and the struggles of a socialist revolutionary movement. London describes the fall of the United States to the cruel fascist dictatorship of the Iron Heel, a group of monopoly capitalists. Fearing the popularity of socialism, the plutocrats of the Iron Heel conspire to eliminate democracy and, with their secret police and military, terrorise the citizenry. They instigate a German attack on Hawaii on Dec. 4, 1912; as socialist revolutions topple capitalist governments around the world, the Iron Heel has 52 socialist members of the U.S. Congress imprisoned for treason..."The Iron Heel" is based on Avis Everhard's fictional "Everhard Manuscript" and was written by London as a woman's first person narrative, not a common writing style at the time.

First published in the year 1908; famous writer Jack London's dystopian novel 'The Iron Heel' chronicles the rise of an oligarchic tyranny in the United States. "It cannot be said that the Everhard Manuscript is an important historical document. To the historian it bristles with errors—not errors of fact; but errors of interpretation. Looking back across the seven centuries that have lapsed since Avis Everhard completed her manuscript; events; and the bearings of events; that were confused and veiled to her; are clear to us. She lacked perspective. She was too close to the events she writes about. Nay; she was merged in the events she has described." -Preface
