This book was digitized and reprinted from the collections of the University of California Libraries. It was produced from digital images created through the libraries’ mass digitization efforts. The digital images were cleaned and prepared for printing through automated processes. Despite the cleaning process, occasional flaws may still be present that were part of the original work itself, or introduced during digitization. About the Book The 18th century saw the French and American revolutions. Philosophy and science increased in prominence. Many monarchies of Europe at first embraced Enlightenment ideals, but the French Revolution taugtht them caution. The Ottoman Empire saw a long period of peace and economic expansion, and took no part in European wars between 1740 and 1768. Having not participated in Europe's military innovations during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), the Ottoman military was to fall behind and suffered defeats by Russia in the second half of the century. In music the first half was known as the Baroque period, with Johan Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel as prime examples. The later half was known as the classical period, during which the symphony was developed through the works of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The 18th century also marked the end of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as an independent state. European colonization of the Americas and other parts of the world intensified, with associated mass migrations. Great Britain became a major world power after it defeated France in North America in the 1760s, and conquered large parts of India.
