Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm Grimm's Fairy Tales was first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The first volume of the first edition was published in 1812, containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1815. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totalling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by German illustrator Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions – such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel (shown in original Grimm stories as Hänsel and Grethel) to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references—such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naïvely revealing to her stepmother her pregnancy and the prince's visits—but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825, the Brothers published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition", a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858.

  • Brothers Grimm: The Complete Fairy Tales

    Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

Paperback (Wordsworth Editions Ltd, Jan. 5, 1998)
Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and his brother Wilhelm (1786-1859) were philologists and folklorists. The brothers rediscovered a host of fairy tales, telling of princes and princesses in their castles, witches in their towers and forests, of giants and dwarfs, of fabulous animals and dark deeds. Together with the well-known tales of 'Rapunzel', 'The Goose Girl', Sleeping Beauty', 'Hansel and Gretel' and 'Snow White', there are the darker tales such as 'Death's Messengers' which deserve to be better known, and which will appeal not only to all who are interested in the history of folklore, but also to all those who simply love good story-telling.

Original Disney StoriesAre they really that different from the ones on the movies? Yes, They are.Want an idea of how dark the original Disney stories are? Here's a taste... Rapunzel got pregnant and had twins. Just saying. If you want Scary Disney stories... this book is for you.If you want to read Disney variations... this book is for you.If you want to know the origin of all these stories... you know. This book is a collection of stories from the Brothers Grimm, which are the actual authors of some of the most beloved Disney stories and other well-known folk stories. They compiled all these stories through years of research, to preserve these pieces of the german culture for future generations. Inside you will find the original stories of Snowhite, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Little red riding-hood, Hanzel & Gretel, just to say a few. But these are not like the beautiful stories Disney made you fall in love with. The original stories are raw, dark, and some may even be taken as horror stories. Which makes them great for readers like you, tired of those happily ever after. These stories were created to leave a piece of moral knowledge to the reader. Although not doing so in the most child-friendly way. Which is way more fun!

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 22, 2018)
Excerpt from Popular Stories Collected by the Brothers GrimmI have to express my obligations to the Widow of Mr. Edgar Taylor for obligingly giving her consent to my reprinting the original translation, the labour of reproducing which has been very carefully performed by Messrs. Taylor and Francis, who printed the first editions nearly half a century ago. I had at first thought of reproducing it in two volumes the same size as the originals; but it was Mr. Ruskin's wish that the new edition should appeal to young readers rather than to adults, and the present convenient form was decided upon. The notes, reprinted from the original editions, are by Mr. Edgar Taylor; and to his Widow I am indebted for the loan of the interesting letter from Sir Walter Scott, printed at p. 334.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
