  • Sammy's Day at the Fair: The Digestive System: Featuring Gut Feelings and Reactions

    Jerome Tiller, Paul Tiller

eBook (ArtWrite Productions, May 22, 2019)
Sammy craves a corn dog, and Sammy gets what he wants! Follow the corn dog down Sammy's digestive tract for a humorous introduction to the human digestive system. Spend time at the fair with Sammy and learn about the feelings and reactions everyone experiences at a gut level. A blend of fact and fiction, science and humorous story, Sammy's Day at the Fair: The Digestive System featuring Gut Feelings and Reactions will inform and entertain children and adults alike. Seven nationally-recognized, award-winning teachers endorsed Sammy's Day at the Fair as scientifically accurate and fun to read. They agreed that it's a novel approach to presenting scientific information that will first capture children's imaginations and then ground them in solid biology and physiology. And Sammy's Day at the Fair delves into nutrition and healthy eating habits as well. One of the award-winning teachers said that, "since Sammy's understanding of his digestive system transforms him from a corn dog craver into a healthy eater, the book will also appeal to the reader's sense of good health. So the book is not only tremendously informative, it will make readers want to take action."And the judges for the 2019 Midwest Independent Publishing Association (MIPA) agree with these award-winning teachers. On May 4, 2019, Sammy's Day at the Fair captured two seemingly contradictory awards when it finished as a Finalist in Children's Fiction and then won the Children's Non-Fiction book award. Perhaps this is a first in children's book award competitions, one and the same book receiving awards in both juvenile fiction and juvenile non-fiction categories. One judge in the Children's Non-Fiction category thinks "more kids would go into science and anatomy if taught with this kind of book--it's very easy to comprehend and a great way to explain biology with excellent pictures." Another judge really enjoyed the general idea of following a boy at a fair to teach biology and said that the book would be a great teaching tool. A judge in the Children's Fiction category found it interesting, fun, and easy to read, and commented that her 10 year old daughter loved it!
