  • The Scottish Chiefs: An Historical Novel

    Miss Jane Porter

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 6, 2016)
Jane Porter (17 January 1776 – 24 May 1850) was an English historical novelist, dramatist and literary figure. Jane Porter was born in Durham as the third of the five children of William Porter and Jane née Blenkinsop. Tall and beautiful as she grew up, Jane Porter's grave air earned her the nickname La Penserosa ("the pensive girl"). After her father's death, her family moved to Edinburgh, where Sir Walter Scott was a regular visitor. Some time afterwards the family moved to London, where the sisters became acquainted with a number of literary women: Elizabeth Inchbald, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Hannah More, Elizabeth Hamilton, Selina Davenport, Elizabeth Benger and Mrs Champion de Crespigny. Porter's siblings also achieved some fame in their lifetimes; her sister Anna Maria Porter was also a novelist; her brother Sir Robert Ker Porter was a noted painter. Porter is considered to have "crafted and pioneered many of the narrative tools most commonly associated with both the national tale and the historical novel." Her 1810 work The Scottish Chiefs, about William Wallace, one of the earliest examples of the historical novel, was very successful and the French version was banned by Napoleon). It has remained popular with Scottish children. The Pastor's Fireside (1815) was a story about the later Stuarts. Porter contributed to periodicals and wrote the play Switzerland (1819), which seems to have been deliberately sabotaged by its lead Edmund Kean and closed after its first performance. She is sometimes "credited" with the 1822 production Owen, Prince of Powys, which closed after only three performances, but this was actually the work of Samson Penley. Porter also wrote Tales Round a Winter Hearth (1821), Coming Out (1828), and The Field of Forty Footsteps (1828) with her sister, Anna Maria.

  • Maddy's Wings

    Jan Porter

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 13, 2018)
‘A well-plotted and highly-emotional historical novel. A FINALST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards UK 2018“It was difficult to tell what was lightning, air fire or ground fire. It seemed we were trying to navigate a sky filled with fireworks within the middle of a storm. The plane shuddered, losing altitude in a dive that was too steep and too fast. Concerned that the stalling engine’s fire and tail rip may ignite the load of ammunition within, I instinctively banked, aiming offshore to the water below."Maddy survived and now she wants to know why. Racked with survivor’s guilt and beginning to suffer from Alzheimer’s in her old age, 92-year-old Maddy has a painful recollection stuck on repeat – the moment she crashed a loaded B26 bomber during her role as an Air Auxiliary Pilot in World War II. Maddy’s relives poignant memories; growing up during the Great Depression, war traumas, the death of her daughter and unborn grandchild, and yet it is the plane crash that she cannot get out of her head. As Maddy’s memories fade and life draws to a close, she seeks to live her last moments to the fullest. From intriguing new neighbours to a pet pig and giggle brownies, humour and heartbreak abounds as she struggles to shake off the survivor’s guilt that has haunted her for so long. Maddy’s free-spirited adventures are thwarted by a ruthless elder care worker, who is making her life a misery. Strange events unfold – the decades old cold case of a murdered local Pastor surfaces, and shocking truths come to light about little sister Rosie’s life during and after the war. What really caused that fateful plane crash? Why did Maddy survive while others lost their lives? What really happened to her little sister Rosie during the war? As she faces the final challenges of life to set herself free from the shackles of culpability, Maddy may just redefine what it means to be a hero.
