  • Hound-Dog Man

    Fred Gipson

    Hardcover (Harper & Brothers, N. Y, Jan. 1, 1949)
Twelve-year-old Cotton Kinney has everything a boy could want-except a dog. For Christmas, Cotton bought his dad a studded dog collar and his mom an enameled cake-mixing pan just the right size for feeding a dog. It didn't do any good. When Christmas comes, Cotton still doesn't get his dog. But Blackie Scantling, best coon hunter in the country, and his two coon hounds, Rock and Drum, come by for dinner one night. Blackie takes Cotton and his best friend Spud, and Spud's little feisty-dog Snuffy, on a series of adventures that include a show-down with a bull, a wrestling match with a turkey gobbler, and the search for a dog Cotton can call his own.

  • The Trail-Driving Rooster

    Fred Gipson

    Hardcover (Harper & Brothers, March 15, 1955)
A rooster named Dick with his brothers and sisters are put on the chuck wagon of a cattle drive, going from Oakville, Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. The cook had no trouble with the rest of the flock, but Dick didn't think much of being fried so he took off. The men finally decided any chicken with that much spunk deserved to live, so they adopted him. Dick played a big role in dealing with some Indians, with a stampede, and with a restaurant owner who wouldn't serve the African-American cook.
