The contest for Missouri was ten-fold more intense than that for Kentucky, for in it the Federal authorities had to meet the hostility of the entire State Government, composed of brave and determined men.For the historical facts, he has examined the official records, and many books and articles which bear on the subject; also he has gleaned many things from his personal acquaintance with those who were actors in the scenes. But to no book has he been so much indebted as to Colonel Thomas L. Snead's "The Fight for Missouri." Colonel Snead is a singularly frank and honest writer. He was in a position where he was cognizant of the secret movements of the State Government in its efforts to take the State out of the Union, and these he has revealed.
