Sir Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford (1837-1916) was raised to the peerage as Baron of Redesdale in 1902. He was also a Knight of the Bath and a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. After joining the Foreign Service in 1858, Lord Redesdale was posted in St. Petersburg, Peking, and Tokyo. It was during his service in Japan, in 1871, that he wrote Tales of Old Japan. The book introduced a whole new audience to Japanese culture and folklore, and is considered a milestone in East-West understanding.

It will be noticed that very little allusion is made in these Tales to the Emperor and his Court. Although I searched diligently, I was able to find no story in which they played a conspicuous part. Another class to which no allusion is made is that of the Gôshi. The Gôshi are a kind of yeomen, or bonnet-lairds, as they would be called over the border, living on their own land, and owning no allegiance to any feudal lord. Their rank is inferior to that of the Samurai, or men of the military class, between whom and the peasantry they hold a middle place. Like the Samurai, they wear two swords, and are in many cases prosperous and wealthy men claiming a descent more ancient than that of many of the feudal Princes.

The member of a distinguished British literary family, A. B. Mitford traveled widely with his parents as a youth and lived in various European countries. From 1866-70, he served as an attaché with the British legation at Edo (Tokyo) — one of the first foreign diplomats to do so. During his brief stay there, Mitford lived through a period of dramatic and tumultuous change in Japanese history. A feudal nation on his arrival, Japan had entered the era of “Westernization” before he left some three years later.
