The year is 1932 - the height of the Great Depression - and thirteen-year-old Margy must leave her farm in Manitoba. Margy's mother died four years earlier, and now her father's new wife has presented him with an ultimatum: either Margy goes or I do. Children's Aid seems to be the only answer until Margy's two Ontario aunts, virtual strangers, send word that they will take her in. After the unexpected whirl of a three-day train trip Margy arrives on the aunts' doorstep - skinny, confused and vulnerable.
As Margy settles in with Aunt Alice and Aunt Edith her life unfolds in a variety of lively misadventures, including an unfortunate encounter with leeks, a Halloween prank that backfires, and a disasterous sled ride. All the while, Margy's spirit animates those around her as she struggles to find love and acceptance in her new home.
This book was designated "Our Choice" by the Canadian Children's Book Centre, and short-listed for the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children in the year of its publication.
