The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is located in East Asia. It is the world’s most populated country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. It is the world’s second-largest country by land mass and the largest importer and exporter of goods.
Its history goes back to the earliest ancient civilizations in the basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. China has traditionally been ruled by dynasties, beginning around 2000 B.C. Since 221 B.C., when the Qin Dynasty was formed, the country has existed in some form or other as a Chinese Empire.
The Republic of China (ROC) overthrew the last dynasty in 1911, and ruled the Chinese mainland until 1949. After the defeat of the Empire of Japan in World War II, the Communist Party defeated the nationalist Kuomintang in mainland China and established the People's Republic of China in Beijing on October 1, 1949. The Kuomintang Republic Of China (ROC) relocated to its present capital of Taipei in Taiwan.
Today, the People’s Republic of China enjoys a thriving economy. Although still very poor in rural areas, urban centers are now growing a middle class and its upper class includes some of the world’s richest billionaires.
Now it is the student’s turn to learn all about China. This book is designed as an introduction to this country: its history, customs, culture, food, and more. An ample array of photos and illustrations bring China to life, depicting both ancient and modern aspects. A unique study guide is included, which offers the student a list of books as well as additional resources, all selected to encourage further exploration.
