Set in the eighteenth century at the time of the Jacobite rebellion, Francis Rimpole, a fourteen-year-old boy, and his eleven-year-old sister, Annabel, find themselves attracted to the House of Stuart. Living in the North Riding, however, they are almost alone in the loyalty to the Jacobite cause. Then suddenly, pursued by the military, a young man with a lean and insolent handsome face comes into their lives. Is he, too, of Stuart sympathies and is he being hounded because of his beliefs? Here is the beginning of a prolonged period of doubt and anxiety for Francis and Annabel, always with the suspicion that their loyalty could possibly be misplaced.
